Results: Due to high rates of drug abuse, the study identified different health economic costs including a high cost of healthcare due to high morbidity and mortality, a high risk in public safety, major crimes related to substance addiction, and loss in productive hours. Conclusion: Considering that substance abuse has such significant impacts on the economy, it is important for governments in developed countries to enforce programs to prevent and control substance abuse.
